Step Therapy: Patients First instead of "Fail First"

Congress is considering including the Safe Step Act in a Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) reform package.

Let Congress know the importance of including the Safe Step Act in the package using the ACR’s legislative action center tool.

 What is Step Therapy?
Step therapy – also known as “fail first” – is a troubling practice employed by many insurers that forces patients to try medications preferred by the insurance company before being approved for the medication their doctor prescribed – even when doctors are certain the “preferred” option won’t be effective.

What Would the Safe Step Act Achieve?

The Safe Step Act would ensure that employer plans offer an expedient and medically reasonable step therapy exceptions process. This exception process would set a clear timeline to help patients bypass medically inappropriate step therapy protocols, ensuring access to the right treatment at the right time.

Let Congressional leadership know the importance of passing the Safe Step Act in the final PDM reform package!  (H.R. 2630/S. 652).
