Prior authorization (PA) has become a significant barrier to timely access to medically necessary care for our nation’s seniors. Studies show that 94% of physicians report delays in patient care due to PA, and 30% of patients have experienced delays in treatment. These unnecessary holdups can lead to worsened health conditions and a diminished quality of life for our seniors.
Introduced in the 119th Congress by Senators Roger Marshall, MD (R-KS) and Mark Warner (D-VA), and by Representatives Mike Kelly (R-PA), Suzan DelBene (D-WA), Ami Bera, MD (D-CA), and John Joyce, MD (R-PA), the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act (H.R. 3514/S. 1816) seeks to address these critical issues by streamlining the PA process and reducing administrative burdens on healthcare providers.
The bipartisan legislation was introduced with 47 senators and 73 representatives as original cosponsors. Additionally, 140 organizations representing patients, health care providers, the medical technology and biopharmaceutical industry, health plans and others endorse the legislation.
